  • DescriptionJSA monthly claimant count collected by ONS. Rates are calculated as a proportion of working age population (16-64). Rates are not seasonally adjusted. The national and regional rates differ from those published in the media, which use the estimated workforce as the base for calculating the rate and are seasonally adjusted.
  • Headline FindingsSandwell's Job Seekers Allowance claimant rate in July 2012 stands at 7.4% of working age population, compared with an England average of 3.8%.
    * The wards with the highest rates are Soho and Victoria (11.7%), Princes End (10.7%) and West Bromwich Central (9.7%).
    * The ward with the lowest rate (Great Barr with Yew Tree, 4.1%), is still above the national average.
    * The Sandwell rate increased steadily through the first half of 2011 and remained stable for the second half . It has remained high through the first half of 2012.
